SENT BY FAX TO PAT SELTZER OR
SHELLY BEGAY, MONUMENT VALLEY
HIGH SCHOOL, (435) 678 - 2187

Dear Mrs. Begay:

Thank you for your patience while we finalize details to remove your radioactive hogan.  Although we are still working out some final details, we expect to start the cleanup work at your hogan by late March or early April.  Dan Suter, who visited your home with me last November, will be the EPA On-Scene Coordinatore in charge of the hogan removal, assuming you formally accept our offer.

EPA's  Emergency  Response Office has informed me that we can provide for the replacement value of your hogan or, as we previously discussed, we can replace your hogan with a pre-fabricated storage shed on a heavy base (see enclosed picture).  The replacement value that we can offer for your hogan (including materials and labor) is up to $3000.  With respect to the option of providing a pre-fabricated structure, I misspoke about placing the shed on a concrete pad.  I have since learned that the shed does not require a concrete pad.  However, this should not concern you as it is my understanding that this storage shed is well constructed and will not blow away under normal conditions.  I have not recieved word from our office about providing funds for the healing ceremony you requested, but I hope to hear back soon and will notify you as soon as I can.

We will need a signed access agreement before we can conduct any work or provide compensation for the work.  We provided you with an access agreement during our November visit to your hogan.  However, please let know if you need another copy and we can sign the paperwork when we start the work.  In event you do not want us to proceed with the removal of your hogan, please contact Wenona Wilson at (800) 231-xxxx by Friday, March 23.  Otherwise we will try to reach you to confirm the date and replacement arrangements.

If you have any additional questions about the Navajo Abandoned Uranium Mine Project, please contact me at (415) 744-xxxx or Wenona Wilson at (415) 744-xxxx or (800) 231-xxxx.

Sincerely,

Andrew Bain

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Elsie's situation is not unique in the Southwest. There are many Native and non-Native families who live near abandoned uranium mines. They are not covered by the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act which currently includes the following individuals....uranium miners, millers, transporters, on-site atomic test observers, downwind communities (including Monument Valley, Utah)

If you would like information about current organizing efforts focusing on the health concerns of families living near abandoned uranium mines, email your comments or questions to this site.

If you would like to make a contribution to Elsie and her family, please make your check payable to her and send it to her directly at the address below. THANK YOU.
